Rose River Memorial Greater
Houston Messaging

Feb 14th, 2023
The Greater Houston Rose River Memorial is a grassroots art installation consisting of approximately 12,000 handmade red felt roses, each representing someone in the greater Houston area who passed away from COVID-19.

The installation owes a great deal to the Burbank Tournament of Roses who have stepped in to help make roses, mount them on our fishing netting and also create a letter 'B' armature on which we will place the roses. We also thank the City of Burbank for all their help and support. Special thanks to Robin Hanna and all those who have helped at the Burbank Tournament of Roses.

All the roses were handmade by volunteers and strung on fishing line. The Rose River Memorial concept was originated by artist Marcos Lutyens and has been installed in various formats throughout the country. The memorial will be displayed in Tranquillity Park until February 26 and then the roses and accompanying materials will move on to the next city to display them.

On February 24 at 1 p.m. CST, we will hold a program upon the opening of the exhibit. Speakers will include Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Houston City Council Member Letitia Plummer, Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia, family members of those lost to COVID-19, performers, and other community members.

The Greater Houston Rose River Memorial is sponsored by COVID-19 Wall of Memories, Rose River Memorial, the MultiCultural Center, the Widow Diaries, Iman Academy, VAST Academy, and Harris County Pct. 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia and Mónica Garcia.

We invite those who have lost loved ones to COVID-19 to join us in Houston on February 24 for our opening program. Friends and family members can represent their loved one by carrying a photo, saying a few words, or simply with their presence. Sign up here to receive more details about participation.

We are so honored to team up with [@roserivermemorial artist @marcoslutyens @covid19wallofmemories @mcc.texas] and local community members to present the Greater Houston Rose Memorial the weekend of Feb. 24-26. The exhibit consists of strings of roses draped across a small hill in Tranquillity Park. Each red felt rose is handmade in memory of someone who passed away from COVID-19 in the greater Houston area. On Feb. 24 at midday we will hold an inaugural program to remember, mourn, and honor the COVID dead. Please join us. The installation will be up through midday Feb. 26.
